At the very least, this working farm is an experiment. It's more about what we can do differently and still do it successfully, than anything else.
Who says you have to do it like everyone else?
We are very proud of what we have done with our little piece of the globe. We raise more than just Scottish Highlanders. Other types of animals on our ranch style farm is Boer goats, Shetland and Katahdin sheep, heritage & show poultry (turkeys & chickens).
Most of the animals on our farm are pasture raised, organically fed...
or both.
We consider our fold of Highlanders small, consisting of only 9 animals (3 registered cows, 1 grade cow, 4 heifers and a bull).
Sampson has the classic good looks of a fine highland bull - just look at that face. He is young, but shows great promise.
We bought Caitlin in the spring of 2008. She has a very gentle disposition and loves to be hand fed her treats. Apples are her favorite. At a height of less than 48" she is considered a mid-sized miniature Highlander.
She is was our first registered cow - and a perfect example of a classic Scottish Kyloe (ky-loe or ky-ley). She even has some white on her belly and udder... according to Scottish lore, a Kyloe with these white markings is said to be from an ancient line of good milkers.
The back on this registered cow is incredible - straight as an arrow. She is 5 yrs old and is hopefully bred to Sampson for spring calving.

She is also 5 years of age and registered. Darker in color than Sammy, but equal in structure. Hannah is also bred to Sampson
Delilah, like our bull Sampson, is unrelated to the rest of the fold. She is nicely stout, with good feet under her. We mustn't forget... she's really cute too.

We added LaVerne to the fold in Nov. of 2008. We acquired her from Fox Lake Farms of the Faribault, MN area. She, as are our other reds, is 5 yrs old, and, of course, red in color. LaVerne has a larger set of horns than our others and she has slightly more curly/wavy forelocks, instead of the typical long straight hair. LaVerne had a bull calf May 27th. At this time, we have not decided if he is for sale.

Our newest addition to our fold is Sadie. She was born in May of 2008. We acquired her from Trout Brook Vineyards, LLC of Hudson WI. In this photo she appears red, but when you view her in person, she looks as though she will mature into a silver (grayish/silver hair w/black nose and hooves) like her sire, Schon Boden's Andrew James. Sadie's dam, Schon Boden's Shawna, is a deep full-bodied cow with so much size on her, that we are assuming Sadie will someday be the fold's alpha female, producing some of our ranch's biggest beef animals.
