At the very least, this working farm is an experiment. It's more about what we can do differently and still do it successfully, than anything else.
Who says you have to do it like everyone else?
Even though we
professionally graze for other beef growers, we do
raise a few head of or own 100% grass-fed beef cattle, on our Certified
Organic pastures.
We are very proud of what we have done with our little piece of the
globe. We raise more than just Highland cattle. Other
types of animals on our ranch style farm is pastured hogs, meat goats,
lamb, heritage & show poultry (turkeys & chickens) and rabbit.
Most of the animals on our farm are pasture raised, organically fed...
or both.
We consider our fold of Highland cattle small, consisting of only 16 animals (4 registered cows, 2 grade cows, 2 heifers, 5 calves and 2 bulls). 4 of the calves were born this spring and the last one (Caitlin's) was born July, 22, 2011.

Sampson has the classic good looks of a fine highland animal - currently he is for sale. We may have a mixed ¼ of him spoken for, looking to sell the other ¾ beef. Call for current status. Photo taken last summer.
We bought Caitlin in the spring of 2008. She has a very gentle disposition and loves to be hand fed her treats. Apples are her favorite. At a height of less than 48" she is considered a mid-sized miniature Highlander..
She was our farm's first registered cow - and a perfect example of a classic Scottish Kyloe (ky-loe or ky-ley). She even has some white on her belly and udder... according to Scottish lore, a Kyloe with these white markings is said to be from an ancient line of good milkers. At 16 years of age, we are presently using her as our family's only milk cow.
The back on this registered cow is incredible - straight as an arrow. She is 6 yrs old and is hopefully bred to Eldorado for spring calving (2012).
She is also 6 years of age and registered. Lighter in color than Sammy (her sister), but equal in structure. Hannah is also bred to Eldorado.

Delilah, like our bull Eldorado, is unrelated to the rest of the fold. She is nicely stout, with good feet under her. We mustn't forget... she's really cute too. This is an older photo, she has had a calf since.

We added LaVerne to the fold in Nov. of 2008. We acquired her from Fox Lake Farms of the Faribault, MN area. She, as are our other reds, is 7 yrs old, and, of course, red in color. LaVerne has a larger set of horns than our others and she has slightly more curly/wavy forelocks, instead of the typical long straight hair.

Sadie was born in May of 2008. We acquired her from Trout Brook Vineyards, LLC of Hudson WI. In this photo she appears red, but when you view her in person, she looks as though she will mature into a silver dun (grayish/silver hair w/black nose and hooves) like her sire, Schon Boden's Andrew James. Sadie's dam, Schon Boden's Shawna, is a deep full-bodied cow with so much size on her, that we are assuming Sadie will someday be the fold's alpha female, producing some of our ranch's biggest beef animals.

Our newest addition to our fold is our bull. He is approx. 7 years old and is a handsome, registered bull. We are very excited to have calves from him. We'll know more in 2012 when the calves hit the ground.
For those parties interested in using our pastures for your grazing needs, we can offer our bull to service your heifers or cows.
